Welcome to Modern Languages at Idsall School. 

Languages work! Speaking another language can help you get ahead in your perfect job in the future. Employers and universities are increasingly looking for people with language skills. Being able to speak a language can help you to broaden your horizons, make new friends and have experiences that will benefit you throughout your life.

Modern Languages at Key Stage 3

Students will learn either French or German.  We use a range of materials in our lessons to bring the languages alive – websites, video clips, music, PowerPoints, Kerboodle, Vocab Express and Textbooks.  Pupils get to meet and work with our language assistants who help to bring the country and the language to the classroom for our students.

Modern Languages at Key Stage 4

Students begin some GCSE work in Year 9, which gives them a great foundation to build on in Years 10 and 11.  We look at topics such as World of Work, Technology, Sport and Free time and Holidays.  Year 11 complete controlled assessments in Speaking and Writing which count for 60% of their GCSE, the final 40% (Reading and Listening) is taken at the end of Year 11.  Year 10 are studying for the new style 9-1 GCSE and their exams will all be taken at the end of Year 11.  Lessons use a blend of the course book, video clips, authentic materials and websites and students have the opportunity to develop their language skills using this variety of sources.  We are also fortunate to have French and German Language Assistants in the department who work with our students in a small group environment to further support their learning.

Modern Foreign Languages at Key Stage 5

We offer both French and German at A Level, using the AQA specification. Students studying French have the opportunity to undertake Work Experience in France at the end of Year 12.   Currently, we do not have any students studying A Level French or German.
