Accelerated Reader Programme
All students at Key Stage 3 take part in the Accelerated Reader Programme, in conjunction with their English lessons. The English department has invested in a wide range of new books to suit different abilities and tastes, which we are very keen to utilise to get our students reading more. We have seen a huge amount of success with the programme in the past and are looking forward to using it again this year.
The Accelerated Reader Programme is simple: a student reads a book, takes an online quiz, and gets immediate feedback. Students respond to regular feedback and are motivated to make progress with their reading skills. While the programme exposes students to a wide range of new and exciting texts, it also encourages students to track their own progress, feel a sense of achievement and develop a love of reading.
All students taking part in the programme will be given reading targets based on standardised reading tests, which will be updated each season. There are three separate quizzing periods throughout the year, one each term. Each term, students will be given three targets that will relate to their reading. The first is a target book level – students shouldn't read too many books below their target book level. The second is a target quiz score, which for all students is 85%. Finally, students will be given a book points target – this is the key target. Each book is worth a number of points based on its length – the longer the book, the more points it’s worth. The more questions they get correct on their quiz determines how many of the points they receive. For example, for a book worth 5 points, if they score 100% on the quiz, they get 5 points, if they score 80%, they get 4 points.
