Humanities Field Trip to Krakow (Poland) October 2019
Humanities Field Trip to Krakow, Poland
Estimated dates: 25th- 28th October 2019
We are pleased to announce our intention to take a residential field trip to Krakow in Poland, during October half-term 2019. This will be an educational visit, which supports learning in History and RE based on WWII, the Holocaust and East European culture for Geography. We regard it as an excellent opportunity for our students to experience life in a very different cultural environment to the UK. We hope that the challenges that the week provides will spur them on to considerable achievements, especially for GCSE History students who study Weimar and Nazi Germany and its effects on the Jewish population for their Paper 3: Source based exam.
The trip is being offered to all students from Year 9-11. This is the third time that we will be running a residential to Poland and we know that it is a very popular trip. It is therefore likely that a reserve list will be drawn up in the event that we exceed the maximum student capacity. The maximum number of students we can take is 40 due to restrictions with the accommodation size.
The provisional cost of the tour is payment for the following:
- Return flights from the UK - Krakow
- Coach Transfers in the UK and to & from Krakow airport
- Accommodation for 3 nights Full Board
- Guided Excursion to Auschwitz-Birkenau by coach
- Guided walking tour of Krakow Jewish Quarter
- Entry to the Schindler's Factory Museum
- Entrance to the Galicia Jewish Museum with a Holocaust survivor talk included
- Airport taxes and air passenger duty at current rates
- VAT at current rates to tour operators
- Travel and medical insurance
- ATOL protection on flights
We will travel with Halsbury Travel, which has an outstanding reputation in the school travel community and the Faculty has travelled with several times in the past to Poland, Malta, Germany and China. Low cost airlines tend to release flight prices only 9 months before we fly so I cannot confirm Flight Company, times or airport but this will be confirmed in the next letter once an application to go on the residential has been confirmed and final numbers based on student places have been allocated. For your peace of mind and financial protection, Halsbury Travel is ABTA bonded and holds an Air Travel Operator's Licence (ATOL). It is also a proud member of the School Travel Forum, a group of leading tour operators who promote good practice and safety within the school travel industry. It has also been awarded the Learning Outside the Classroom Quality Badge.
The Hotel we are likely to use is the Hotel Wilga in Krakow. The Hotel Wilga is situated in the centre of Krakow, just a short walk from the city’s historical Old Town. Accommodation is also on a Full Board basis.
The total cost of flights, transfers, full board accommodation, 4 days, local coach transport and activities is approximately £530.00, which is due in instalments. To reserve a place on this trip, a non-refundable deposit of £150.00 per student is required by Monday 17th December 2018. When the student places will be confirmed, a further £200.00 will be due in February 2019. The remaining balance of approximately £180.00 will need to be paid by July 2019. Exact dates of subsequent payments, after the initial deposit will be outlined in the next letter. Please note that it is expected for you to keep to these payment deadlines to avoid additional interest being incurred. Please note that any cheques will not be cashed before trip confirmation has taken place.
If you would like your child to attend the Krakow residential trip, please complete the attached deposit reply slip and forward it with a cheque or cash for the sum of £150.00 to the Finance Office by Monday 17th December 2019. After this time, student names will be confirmed by letter. Should names exceed 40 students, we will draw names out of a hat with a gender balance being taken into consideration. If your child is unsuccessful, you will receive a confirmation letter to this effect with your initial cheque or a request for you to collect the cash from the Finance Office.
An initial Parental Briefing will take place regarding the final details of the trip, once student places have been allocated and trip details have been finalised. The information regarding this evening will be sent out to the parents/guardians of the successful students attending this trip. This letter will be sent out in the New Year (2019).
Please do not hesitate to contact us at school if you have any questions in the meantime.
